Copper is the "Foundation Master" of the matrix. As a basic material, it typically accounts for a certain proportion in matrix formulations—whether Iron-based, copper-based, cobalt-based, or otherwise. It forms a continuous matrix that wraps and fixes diamond particles, much like reinforced concrete in construction, tightly bonding all components together to provide the tool with its basic shape and mechanical strength.

Copper is also the "Key Balancer" for performance regulation. The quality of a tool's performance hinges on the balance between the matrix's hardness and toughness. Soft and ductile by nature, copper effectively dilutes the brittleness of hard phases such as cobalt and tungsten carbide, making the matrix both wear-resistant and impact-resistant. Meanwhile, copper content directly controls the matrix's wear rate, acting as a critical regulator to ensure the continuous, stable exposure of diamond edges and maintain the tool's self-sharpening property.

Furthermore, copper is the "High-Efficiency Promoter" for optimized sintering. With a melting point of 1083°C—moderate among commonly used metals—copper can form a liquid phase with low-melting-point metals like tin (232°C) and zinc (420°C), significantly lowering the overall sintering temperature (usually to the range of 700–900°C). This not only saves energy but also protects diamonds from high-temperature damage. In addition, copper's excellent plastic flowability during sintering effectively fills particle gaps, greatly increasing matrix density and thereby extending tool life.
