Basic Principles for Formula Design of Pre-alloyed Powders for Diamond Saw Blades
Pre-alloyed powders act as binders in the matrix of diamond saw blades. When designing their compositions, the following requirements should be considered:
-
1. The sintering temperature of the saw blade mainly depends on the melting point of the bonding metal. To avoid thermal damage to diamonds caused by high temperatures, priority should be given to low-melting-point metals or ultra-fine Metal Powders.
2. The metal that holds the abrasive should have an appropriate wear efficiency, which is crucial for the cutting rate. A matrix that is too hard and not easily worn will make it difficult for diamonds to expose their edges, prone to flattening. Conversely, an overly soft and easily eroded matrix will cause diamonds to fall off prematurely, failing to exert their normal working efficiency.
3. The Pre-Alloyed Powder matrix must rigidly support the diamond particles so that they will not be scraped off, sink deep into the matrix, or move during the cutting process.
4. For stones with higher hardness, such as hard granite, impact wear is dominant in almost the entire range of circumferential speeds. Therefore, pre-alloyed powders with certain wear resistance should be selected for the matrix, and they should match the type, concentration, particle size of diamonds, the material being cut, and the operating conditions.

5. The pre-alloyed binder should just wet the skeleton components and diamonds in the matrix at a certain sintering temperature, and must not lose (flow away) under external pressure.
6. If the pre-alloyed binder reacts with the skeleton components during sintering, the reaction should only be beneficial to the mechanical properties of the matrix and reducing the sintering temperature (such as ultra-fine powders). The formation of alloys with poor performance is not allowed, nor is the disappearance of the liquid phase that fails to fully wet the skeleton components and diamonds. At the same time, it must not cause damage to diamonds.
7. Under the normal working conditions of the saw blade, the pre-alloyed bonding metal should be able to bear the stress transmitted by the hard particles (skeleton components and diamonds) in the matrix without deformation or displacement.
8. According to stones with different hardness, the types and contents of pre-alloyed binders and skeleton components should be appropriately adjusted to adapt to the cutting of different stones.
