
What should I do if the cutting blade always chips when cutting rock slabs
- The rock slab contains a large amount of mineral components such as quartz and feldspar, with a Mohs hardness of 6-7.
- The high-temperature and high-pressure sintering process gives it glassy enamel characteristics, resulting in poor impact resistance.
- The water absorption rate is ≤0.02%, and the whole material is sintered without glaze layering.

When cutting hard and brittle workpieces, for the selection of the matrix material of the rock slab cutting blade, higher self-sharpening property needs to be considered. The matrix needs to wear moderately so that the diamond can continuously expose its cutting edges. One of my customers has used the main powder KIN-03 for ceramic cutting blades before and was very satisfied with the performance of this Alloy Powder. Now, they want to use it on rock slab cutting blades.
The KIN-03 alloy powder has the following characteristics:
- Excellent red hardness: it can maintain stable performance even at high temperatures.
- Good self-sharpening property: the wear rate of the matrix and the exposure height of the diamond reach an ideal balance.
- Strong holding force: it can firmly fix the diamond particles.
Due to the differences between ceramic tiles and rock slabs, I suggest that on the basis of this main powder, adjust and add some Copper and tin to balance the hardness and bending strength, and enhance the bonding strength between the diamond and the matrix. This not only maintains the holding force of the matrix on the diamond and a reasonable exposure height of the cutting edges but also ensures better heat dissipation when the rock slab saw blade is cutting.
During the sample testing process, the customer reported that when using this rock slab saw blade to cut an 800×15mm thick rock slab, it took 1 minute, the cutting feel was smooth, there was no sparking, and the cut surface was smooth, which met the expected performance.
To solve the problem of chipping when the rock slab saw blade is cutting, the core adjustments for the rock slab saw blade are as follows:
- Select a matrix material with red hardness and self-sharpening property.
- Optimize the matrix formula to balance toughness and hardness.
If these two points are well done, your rock slab saw blade will not chip when cutting.
