What micron iron powder should be added to the matrix of tower saw segments for cutting high-silica sandstone?

2025-07-15

In the previous issue, we talked about the performance requirements for the matrix of tower saw segments used for cutting "Huangjinma" granite. In this issue, Sagwell will continue to discuss whatmicron iron powder should be used in the segments for cutting high-silica sandstone from Macheng.

High-silica sandstone generally refers to sandstone with a quartz content exceeding 80%. A typical characteristic of this material is its extremely high stickiness; its corrosiveness to saw segments is more than 5 times that of granite, and its high abrasiveness directly shortens the service life of the segments. In the design of the matrix for tower saw segments, technicians from Sagwell recommend fully considering three aspects:

"ultra-wear-resistant matrix + impact-resistant diamond + interface strengthening".

  1. For the abrasive matrix material, while considering cost, we suggest using a high-iron-based matrix. Using high-activity micron iron powder allows the matrix to achieve better alloying at relatively low temperatures. At the same time, to avoid the problem of diamond not being exposed due to excessive hardness of the matrix, adding materials such as Copper, iron-zinc alloy, ferrophosphorus, etc., can increase the compressive strength of the matrix.

  1. In terms of diamond selection, products like SDA85, with strength between SDA and 100, are suitable for processing objects with high toughness and strong abrasiveness, and the concentration should be around 20-22.

  1. For the segment sintering process, including degumming, pre-sintering, main sintering, and isostatic pressing, it is necessary to fully consider the actual situation and design reasonable parameters such as pressure, temperature, and atmosphere protection.

Sagwell's series of discussions on tower saw segments has come to an end. For more information about micron iron powder, please stay tuned.
