Pre-alloyed powders for laser welding of diamond tools

2024-12-13

In sintered diamond tools, the welding methods generally include high-frequency welding and laser welding. In terms of the impact on the tools, laser welding is more prominent in welding strength and aesthetics. Today, Sagwell will discuss with you whatpre-alloyed powder is suitable for the laser welding.

So what kind of welding materials are needed for the laser welding? In the laser welding process of diamond tools, the selection of transition layer welding materials is crucial. These materials need to have good welding properties, mechanical properties and thermal expansion coefficients that match the tool head and substrate.

1 - Single material

Cobalt (Co): Cobalt is an ideal transition layer material because it can form a good metallurgical bond with the steel matrix. The steel matrix and the cobalt-based material can form an infinite solid solution with Fe, thereby achieving good bonding strength. However, the price of cobalt is relatively high, and cost factors need to be considered in practical applications.

Nickel (Ni): Nickel is also a commonly used transition layer material with good welding performance and mechanical properties. Nickel can form a stable bonding interface between the diamond drill bit and the matrix material.

2 - Pre-Alloyed Powder materials such as binary and multi-element materials

Iron-cobalt (FeCo),iron-nickel (FeNi), cobalt-nickel (CoNi), etc.:

These dual-element combination materials combine the advantages of each element, which can reduce costs while ensuring welding strength. For example, the combination of iron-nickel pre-alloyed powder can not only give full play to the good welding performance of cobalt, but also reduce costs by adding iron. Ternary and above combinations: such as FeCoNi, FeCoCu, etc., these multi-element combination materials can further optimize the performance of the transition layer by precisely controlling the content and proportion of each element to meet specific usage requirements.

Sagwell's technicians also have other considerations:

1. Melting point and thermal expansion coefficient: The melting point of the transition layer material should match the welding process to avoid excessive thermal stress during welding. At the same time, the thermal expansion coefficient of the material should be close to that of the cutter head and the base material to reduce the risk of deformation and cracking after welding.

2. Cost-effectiveness: When selecting transition layer materials, cost-effectiveness factors must also be considered. Under the premise of ensuring welding quality, try to choose lower-cost materials to reduce production costs.

In summary, there are many welding materials for diamond tool laser welding transition layer, and the specific selection should be based on the actual use requirements, material properties and cost performance. In practical applications, it is still feasible to use pre-alloyed powder to replace high-cost materials such as cobalt and nickel. Of course, Sagwell technicians recommend that the best welding material combination and process parameters should be determined for customers through experiments and evaluations.
