Metal powder as raw material, what are the preparation process and advantages of sintered diamond tools?

The common manufacturing methods of diamond tools are divided into three mainstream processes: sintering, electroplating, and brazing, all of which use Metal Powder as one of the raw materials. This article mainly introduces sintered diamond tools.​

The sintering method is also known as the Powder Metallurgy method.​

Process steps:​

Batching and mixing:

Mix diamond particles with metal powders (such as Fe, Cu, Co, Cu - Sn alloy, Sn, Zn, various pre - alloyed powders, etc.). Select powders with good formability or add a small amount of forming agent. Generally speaking, powders with irregular shapes have better formability.​

Cold pressing forming:

Press into ring - shaped or cylindrical green compacts through a mold.​

Sintering:

Sinter at high temperature (700 - 900℃) in a protective atmosphere (H₂ or vacuum). The matrix powder melts and wraps the diamonds to form a dense structure.​

Post - treatment:

Machining (such as grinding inner holes) or surface treatment.​

Advantages:​

The bonding strength between the matrix and diamonds is high, with good wear resistance and long service life; it is suitable for cutting high - hardness materials (such as granite, concrete).​

Disadvantages:​

The process is complex and the cost is relatively high; if the sintering temperature is too high, it may affect the thermal stability of diamonds. Matrix powders that can be well alloyed at lower sintering temperatures are better.​
