What Aspects Can Improve the Sharpness of Diamond Tools

2025-10-28

Improving the sharpness of diamond tools is a performance that most customers aim to enhance. So, from which aspects can it be achieved? Technicians at Sagwell have recently highlighted the following two key points.

1. Interface Treatment of Diamond

This includes the following two aspects:
Diamond coating adopts electroless nickel (Ni) plating or titanium (Ti) electroplating (film thickness 0.5–2 μm). It can improve wettability, reduce interface embrittlement, and intentionally enrich the soft phase in the coating/adjacent area to form a preferential wear zone.
Meanwhile, attention should be paid to the powder mixing sequence. First mix the coated diamond with soft phase-containing micro-powder (including Cu/Sn), then blend with the main powder. This allows the soft phase to easily enrich around the diamond.

2. Adjustment of Diamond Tool Sintering Process

For Fe–Cu–Ni based matrices, the recommended sintering temperature is 850–930°C.
If the proportion of ultra-fine Fe is high, it can be appropriately reduced to 830–880°C. Shorten the holding time to reduce the risk of carbon diffusion/graphitization.
The recommended holding time is 10–45 min (depending on the density target). Short holding time retains pores, while long holding time improves density.
Heating rate: 5–15°C/min in a vacuum furnace or protective atmosphere, and slower in the degreasing stage (≤2–5°C/min).
Cooling: Slow cooling under protective gas or a small amount of H₂ to avoid oxidation.
The above are suggestions from Sagwell's technicians on improving the sharpness of diamond tools.
